Insurance Authority warns against fraudulent payment requests

The Insurance Authority (IA) today (7 August 2024) alerted the public to bogus payment requests purporting to be made by the IA. The IA has recently received public enquiries again about suspicious invoices titled “Insurance Authority Certificate” or “Capital Insurance Certificate” with fabricated IA details and stamp on them requesting payments. These bogus payment requests were first discovered in April this year and a relevant public alert was issued.

An IA spokesperson reiterated that the IA never issues any invoice in relation to anything named “Insurance Authority Certificate” or “Capital Insurance Certificate”. Also, it is not the role of the IA to issue any insurance policy as purportedly represented in the said “certificates”. The IA has reported the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.

All fees and levies that the IA collects are set out in the IA website. If members of the public receive any suspicious payment requests claiming to be made by the IA, they should verify the documents by contacting the IA via its general enquiry hotline at 3899-9983 (select language, then press “1” > ”0”). Anyone suspecting a scam should report the case to the Hong Kong Police Force.
